Native Garden Revival

Water-Wise Front Yard Transformation in Novato

A Novato homeowner wanted to replace a thirsty lawn with a beautiful, drought-tolerant landscape that would dramatically reduce water consumption while enhancing curb appeal. The existing mature tree was the centerpiece of the property, but declining health raised concerns about its long-term vitality.

Working alongside a professional landscape designer, Pacific Garden Artistry brought the vision to life through expert installation and Master Gardener practices. Before planting began, the team rejuvenated the soil with nutrient-rich compost and organic amendments to create a healthy foundation for long-term growth. The mature tree received targeted fertilization and a dedicated drip irrigation system to support root health and encourage recovery.

More than 130 plants—many of them native California species—were carefully installed to create a vibrant, climate-appropriate landscape that supports local pollinators while requiring significantly less water than a traditional lawn. Crushed limestone was added throughout the planting beds to suppress weeds, improve drainage, and provide a refined, natural finish.

To tie the landscape together, Rich designed a graceful curved pathway using durable steel edging, creating an elegant transition from the driveway to the front entrance. The result is a sophisticated, low-maintenance landscape that conserves water, celebrates California's native beauty, and demonstrates how sustainable landscaping can transform both the appearance and health of a property.
